Rustic Cabin Camping (09-12)

December 4-6, 2009
Organized by: Dan Trew

This cabin camping trip was in Black Moshannon State Park. The only difficulty of this trip was getting the wood-stove to heat the cabin consistently. It was cold, and it snowed 2 inches during the first night. The cabin was in excellent condition and well maintained with large quantities of wood nearby. There is no running water in the cabin, a small inconvenience but not much more. Many board-games were played as well as card-games. Fun was had by all, no one died. The cabin is moderately priced and well maintained, however it is not suitable for groups larger than 6-7. The cabin is also only available from April until mid-December making Fall semester the only winter option.

Colorado (09-10)

November 21-29, 2009
Organized by: Adam Scheletsky

The second Thanksgiving break trip to depart our college campus was a trip to Colorado State Forrest State Park [sic]. The trip consisted of snowshoeing form yurt-to-yurt (Montgomery Pass >> Ruby Jewel >> North Fork Yurt). The difficulty being mainly due to snow-depth and elevation. The weather on the trip was cold with 2 ft of snow, it is 10,000 ft after-all, but the yurts were toasty. Many layers of bacon and clothes made this trip awesome. MSR lightning ascent snowshoes are super bomber, Adam is buying a pair when he gets the money. Adam also forgot the back of the report sheet. As such we have no idea if everyone got along or if there are any dangers, but with no pending lawsuits we assume everyone survived and had a good time.

Everglades (09-09)

November 20-28, 2009
Organized by: Kelly McFadden, Joe Moran

The first Thanksgiving Break trip to depart, this trip explored the wonders of the Everglades National Park. The trip had varying degrees of difficulty depending on the current. As would be expected the weather was warm (80 degrees) and sunny, however it being Florida the weather was also unpredictable at times (high winds and downpours). All the perishable food perished within the first 3 days and large dry-bags were required to keep water-sensitive equipment safe and dry. The trip went smoothly. Note: many notes to follow.
  • Long-term weather forecasts are unreliable for Florida
  • it is suggested that perishable food be purchased in Florida to minimize spoilage
  • lots of bugs
  • bare feet = cut feet
  • sun = sun burn
  • Campsites in Everglades National Park must be reserved in person at the visitor center less than 24 hours before arrival at camp

North Carolina (09-11)

November 20-25, 2009
Organized by: Zach Haas, Jake Catt

The third Thanksgiving trip of Fall 2009 was to Mount Mitchell and areas around it. The trip was originally planned to be ridge hiking, however wintery weather made traversing the mount dangerous and it was decided to change plans and go to Linville Gorge. The gorge was grossly underestimated and proved very challenging at points, most notably a long climb at nearly a 200% grade. The area was plagued by thick clouds, fog, drizzle, rain, and utter dampness. Fortunately all the gear was adequate and no emergencies arose. Other than falling off a cliff in the fog, or getting lost at night, or getting lost during the day in the fog, or trying to cross a freezing river in the rain, or... it was tricky. The group rolled with the challenges and turned out a terrific trip despite setbacks.

WILD (09-07)

October 24-25, 2009
Organized by: Nick Clabbers, Kelly McFadden, Zach Haas, Danielle Gruen, Dan Trew

WILD (Wilderness Instructional Leadership Development) was reorganized this year, but was held in the same spirit as always. Those in attendance participated in sharing their backcountry knowledge, including both soft and hard skill sets. The weather was dead set to wash-out all of us, heavy flooding turned many trails into streams ankle-deep or more. The group was awesome and after opening up flourished. Many games were played and delayed departure for a few hours. Large groups are unwieldy and it is recommended that they be broken up for easier handling.

ACA Canoe/Kayak Collegiate Championship (09-06)

October 9-11, 2009
Organized by: Brian Brosius

This was the second annual attendance of the Penn State Outing Club at the ACAC/KCC. PSOC placed 5th, and not out of 5. We received a certificate which is "on file" with The President. The trip was easy and requires no experience. The weather misbehaved and decided to be everywhere from 35-80 degrees with some sun and some rain. Overall the trip was a good time, no one died, everyone got along. Food of note: Apple Cinnamon Bagels with Hamburgers. Next year's race will be in Western North Carolina.

Allegheny Front Trail (09-05)

October 2-4, 2009
Organized by: Dan Trew

This backpacking trip was to the Black Moshannon State Park along the Allegheny Front Trail. The trip consisted of the Southern-half of the trail, moving a clockwise direction. The trip started in darkness and rain but ended in sunlight and cloudlessness. The fall colors were in full tilt on the Allegheny Plateau resulting in beautiful vistas and a wonderful back-drop for hiking. The trip was greatly downsized prior to its departure due to illness and accidents resulting in a large rented gear surplus (namely 4 tents and 5 backpacks). The beginning portion of the trail should not be attempted in darkness. The many rocks and sudden trail changes make traversal hazardous and requires constant blaze-vigilance. The group did not talk much during the actual hiking, however once at camp the group became quite boisterous. All said, it is a great hiking trail and a great trail.

Hickory Run SP (09-03)

September 18-20, 2009
Organized by: Nick Clabbers

Many attended this outing to the Hickory Run State Park. The trip consisted of day-hikes and campfires, with new members getting to know old members. The chicken suit made many appearances on this trip, and even took its life in its own hands on the Shades of Death trail. The weather for this strip was spectacular, though there was an unusual cold-snap that resulted in frost on one member's hammock and car window. There is currently an album up on the photo-gallery of this trip.

Allegheny River (09-02)

September 11-13, 2009
Organized by: Mike Szedlmayer

The first water-born trip of the 2009 Fall semester was held on the Allegheny River from Kinzua Dam to Indian Waters Outfitters. The trip was reportedly very easy and appropriate for all levels of skill. The less-than-favorable weather at the stat caused a small delay, but the trip ended on a sunny note. There was adequate food, however the kayaks were mediocre (Indian Waters Outfitters is not recommended for a return trip). The water in the Allegheny was dirty and packing in water is recommended if possible. The group was a good mix of core members and new people that got along. A final note: Don't forget a spatula.

Old Logger's Path (09-01)

September 4-7, 2009
Organized by: Joe Moran

The first official trip of the 2009 Fall semester was held in Tiadaghton State Forrest along the Old Logger's Path Trail. The hike was clockwise starting at night in Masten, an abandoned logging town, and completed the entire trail. The trail was marked by a few very significant elevation changes, but overall was an excellent trail system. Early sections of the trail proved to slightly over-grown and prickly, though this was short-lived. The weather was perfect, highs in the 70's and lows in mid 50's. In the prospect of the perfect weather the group elected to not bring any tents and instead sleep on tarps. The food brought was pasta, instant mashed potatoes, stuffing, chicken, eggs, and a large quantity of other foods. There was an excellent amount of food resulting in very little left over at the end of the trip and the portions were very generous. The end of the hike was marked by a stay at the legendary water-hole along the path. The entire group ventured forth into the frigid waters, and many members participated in a an early morning "polar bear swim." The group was cheerful and cooperated well, old friends and new all around.

Gila National Wilderness Area

March 6-15, 2009
Organized by: Nick Clabbers

This Spring Break '09 trip was to the Gila National Wilderness Area, New Mexico. The long-term backpacking trip required much preparation and planing (from dehydrating whole meals, to organizing transportation, and a whole lot more). The area was beautiful, however weather was widely unpredictable and many portions of the trail were challenging. Some equipment brought was not up to par with what the weather threw at it, resulting in some less-than-happy outcomes. No one died however, and the group united against a common foe late in the trip and much laughter was had. There may have been a federal crime committed, but that is the stuff of legend and myth.

Catskills Region, NY

February 20-22, 2009
Organized by: James Basham

This frosty group of adventurers visited the Catskills region in New York during the deep winter. The weather for the trip was mild, considering it was February. The nights were a little chilly, but the snow makes for great insulation. Hiking in the area was beautiful, involving snowshoeing and a negotiable snow-pack. The highlight of the trip however was calling the New York State Police to look for the "lost" group. This involved making good friends with a local resident, driving back and forth between two trail heads several times, worrying, hearing the sound of the impending infrared helicopters, and finally watching our very confused friends come down from the mountain all on their own. The reasoning for the debauchery was a simple misreading of the map and a gross underestimate of the distances needing to be traveled. The lesson: get good, accurate maps. All in all fun was had by all and no one died.

Oil Creek State Park

January 23-25, 2009
Organized by: Joe Moran

This expedition in late January to Oil Creek State Park met with biblical weather, namely 2-3 feet of snow and near-zero temperatures. The following is a detailed description of the trip as related by Joe Moran, the master story teller.

***
The most memorable portions of the trip were pretty much the entire ordeal. From start to finish it was some of the coldest/most difficult camping I've ever done

Initially, the first friday night, we drove into the Wolfkiel Run shelter parking area and just had to make a short quarter-mile walk down from the parking to the shelter area map link: http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/oilcreek/oilcreek_mini.pdf

We had rented Two shelters, but decided upon everybody cramming into one, we were joined that night by a group of Boy Scouts who had taken up the rest of the 6 or 7 shelters.

We woke up that Saturday morning in good spirits ready to take on the Day, (The Boy scout group was also heading to the same Cow run campsite, except they were taking a direct route )
It was about 10:30 and we had to make a choice as to what were were going to do, we could have followed the boy scouts and done the 5 mile route, OR if we were feeling up to it then we could try out the 11 Mile route. We (being all the optimists) voted to do the 11 mile route that took us North along the river to a Suspension Bridge Crossing near Boughton run, and back South to the Cow Run shelters on the other side of the Oil Creek river

So we made our way along the absolutely stunning and snow drenched terrain. The Snow was about 3 feet deep and I was ahead breaking through it. After about thirty minutes to an hour of trudging through the snow, we came to a sort of marker sign and I incorrectly judged that we had gone about 2 Miles already...

In actuality we had probably gone a half a mile at most. From then on it was just snow and exhaustion. We finally reached the suspension bridge and had an extremely cold lunch as we were not hiking anymore and our body temperatures went down. The oranges though, I will say and everyone will attest to, those oranges were the best oranges I have ever eaten.

After we crossed the suspension bridge we still had more than half to go. Instead of following the Trail we decided to go along the train tracks that ran parallel to Oil Creek. It was still absolute brutality. At this point everyone was on their last leg of energy just giving everything they had trudging through the snow, trying to follow the footprints that Ed was making.

Walking along those train tracks seemed to take FOREVER, we might have been going 1 mile an hour tops. We took ALOT of breaks, I once heroicly gave everyone a pep talk to just keep pushing and we'll make it to some picnic area in two miles and like "we're not going to stop until we get there, we're going to make it. No breaks. We can do it." Not more then ten minutes after we set off from my pep talk, I was like "Oh shit I need a break" and we stopped and took a rest. (LOL)

Those train tracks were pure hell and we hadn't even gotten to the hills.

Along the tracks, Rich's shoe had a hole in it and his feet were on the verge of freezing, and he switched socks during one of our rests, that was a bit scary.

After what seemed like forever, we finally got to the Miller Farm bridge where the boy scouts had crossed earlier in the day. From then on it was basically following the Tracks that the boy scouts had made.

Problems from then on. Our Water bottles kept freezing and we all were running out of water
it then got dark and right about the time it got dark we started to climb upwards.

We must have been climbing steadly upwards on long switchbacks

Rich was dehydrating and Ed pretty much saved his life, since I was in the front with my headlamp down just basically in a ZONE following the tracks that the boy scouts made. If I didn't have those tracks to follow it would have taken us alot longer to find our way not to mention not having to break snow.

We were already beyond tired even before it got dark and we started to make our way up the terrain. That last climb up the hill, I remember stopping and waiting a while for Thad and Michele to catch up and then we waited literally 20 minutes for Rich and Ed to catch up.

It was just insane. Without a doubt the most exhausted I had ever been in my life, my feet and hands were freezing, everyone was just BEAT DOWN. We finally made it to the campsite about 3 hours after dark and got a roaring fire going in the shelter. The next day we hiked the short 4 mile route back to the cars. This way was pretty tiring as well. we, myself at least, were able to enjoy the snow covered pines and the scenic beauty of the trail a little more knowing that we weren't going to DIE.

it was pretty EPIC looking back on the trip one year later. Something that I'll never forget.

For those wanting to replicate this experience it is highly recommended that you reserve the shelters in advance, either on line or by phone, because they fill very quickly. Also, tarps to cut the wind coming into the shelters would be a good idea.
